11 Key Questions to Ask When Touring a College Learning Support Center

Visiting the learning support center should be a priority stop on any college tour, especially for students with learning differences. While services vary widely depending on the school, most offer academic assistance and disability accommodations to help students reach their potential.

When investigating a particular college's offerings, come prepared with questions to understand how well the support center can meet your teen’s needs.

Here are 11 important questions to ask:

  1. What services specifically does the learning support center offer? Is individual tutoring available? What about coaching in executive functioning skills or collaborative study groups?
  2. What's the policy on course substitution for math or foreign language requirements (if either of these areas is tough for your student due to a diagnosed disability)?
  3. Can a student take a reduced course load and still be considered full-time for financial aid purposes? What's the minimum number of classes in a reduced course load?
  4. What types of assistive technology do you provide, like text-to-speech software, reading pens, or noise-canceling headphones?
  5. How do you collaborate with professors to coordinate on things like note-takers and exam accommodations?
  6. What extra academic support is there for neurodiverse learning styles? For example, is there tutoring with a professional who's trained in special education (vs. only peer tutoring)? Is weekly academic coaching with a trained professional available?
  7. How does the support center partner with programs across disciplines?
  8. Can you assist students in securing housing accommodations if needed for a single room, service animal, or sensory needs?
  9. What's the process for setting up an initial intake meeting? Will disability documentation be required immediately?
  10. Generally speaking, how smooth is the disability accommodation process between the center and faculty/administrators?
  11. What type of notetaking support is available?

With insight into these key areas, you can determine if the learning support offerings meet the needs of your student and will help support them in achieving success in the college environment.
