Less than half of teens feel they are flourishing in life. This is among the lowest rates compared to previous generations. Over three-fourths believe they have a great future ahead. Yet under half feel prepared for what's to come. Teenagers today also rate their mental health much lower than teens in the past.
In light of these findings, activities outside of school are more vital than ever for teenagers. Participating in clubs, sports, volunteering, hobbies, jobs, and other extracurriculars provides many benefits. These can help teens feel more positive, prepared, and mentally healthy.
Extracurriculars give teenagers the chance to explore and develop their talents. Trying new things allows them to uncover activities they feel passionate about and excel at. This builds confidence and self-esteem. Mastering skills and achieving goals increases motivation.
Being part of extracurriculars also enables teens to expand their social circles. Making new friends who share common interests is great for mental health. Teamwork teaches cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. Leadership roles build responsibility. A sense of belonging counters isolation and loneliness.
Extracurriculars also allow teens to learn time management. Balancing schoolwork with activities promotes organization, scheduling, and productivity habits. Volunteering also exposes teens to potential careers. This can help guide their goals for the future. Internships provide real-world experience and contacts.
The research showed that encouraging adults play a huge role in teens feeling positive about their future. Parents can provide this encouragement by supporting their teen's interests and extracurricular endeavors. Attend their games and performances. Help them brainstorm ideas if they seem stuck. Connect them with resources and networking opportunities related to their passions.
But also allow them to sometimes fail. Experiencing setbacks builds resilience to get back up and try again. Reflecting on disappointments leads to wisdom.
The teen years establish the foundation for adulthood. Extracurricular activities, from sports to student council, theater to volunteering, help teens thrive socially, emotionally, and mentally. Supporting teens' interests prepares them with skills, experiences, and self-belief. This allows them to feel ready and excited for the bright futures ahead.
