Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, communicate, and live. As AI systems grow more advanced, today's teenagers will need to harness new skills to thrive professionally and personally. Here are the 3 most vital abilities high school students must cultivate for an AI-enabled world.
1. Creativity and Imagination
While AI can generate art, stories, and music, it lacks human creativity and imagination. Teenagers can harness their original thinking by exploring diverse passions like writing, painting, filmmaking, and music outside the classroom. They should also learn to ideate innovative solutions to problems and connect disparate concepts when tackling school projects. Flexing their creativity will help teens dream up ideas machines can't.
2. Emotional Intelligence
AI struggles to understand and exhibit emotional intelligence - the ability to identify emotions in yourself and others and respond thoughtfully. Teens can improve their EQ by developing self-awareness through journaling, meditating, or speaking with a counselor. They should also practice empathy by listening attentively, volunteering in their community, and putting themselves in others' shoes. Honing emotional skills will help teens collaborate, lead, and form meaningful relationships in an AI age.
3. Cross-Disciplinary Thinking
As AI grows more specialized, the professionals who can connect insights across fields will have an edge. Teenagers can exercise integrative thinking through interdisciplinary electives like astrobiology, biomechanics, and psychobiology. They should also seek out opportunities like academic decathlons and summer programs that fuse STEM and humanities. Learning across disciplines will enable teens to bring together technical and human insights missing in AI.
The rise of artificial intelligence is an exciting time full of new possibilities. But for teenagers to seize these opportunities, they need to complement AI's capabilities by developing their own creativity, emotional intelligence, and integrative thinking. With these uniquely human skills, young people can thrive alongside AI and shape the future on their own imaginative, socially intelligent, and cross-disciplinary terms.
