We get it—planning a rich, fulfilling summer tailored for a high school student can be daunting, especially amidst the chaos of the school year. You want them to grow, have fun, and make lifelong memories...but figuring out the “how” is easier said than done.
We encourage students to consider what they enjoy, what areas they could improve in, and what their goals for the future are to decide what to do over the summer. With any activity students participate in, there should be opportunities to help them learn more about themselves by expanding their interests, gaining new experiences, or taking on responsibilities.

RESEARCH
For curious students hoping to engage with a subject at a much deeper level, independent research can be a fantastic avenue for exploring their academic area of interest through hands-on learning. From developing an app to writing a play to designing a robot, digging deeper into an established interest is a great way to spend part of summer break. The possibilities for online courses are nearly endless. In addition to classes hosted by colleges, there are several online platforms that deliver course material for independent learners to work at their own pace. Each platform addresses different niches and levels of expertise.
1. Coursera
This platform works with universities and other organizations to offer online courses, specializations, and degrees in a variety of subjects, such as engineering, data science, machine learning, mathematics, business, computer science, digital marketing, humanities, medicine, biology, social sciences, and others. Of interest to many students is a new class offered by John Hopkins on the coronavirus pandemic and how it can be combated through epidemiology.

Summer jobs are a great way for high school students to learn about responsibility, build communication and teamwork skills, and get some extra money. But that doesn't mean it has to be just any job! There are plenty of ways high schoolers can take their summer jobs up a notch in order to make the most out of the experience.
From outdoor activities like camping and canoeing to creative pursuits such as art and theatre, summer camps offer something for everyone. Your teen can learn new physical abilities while also developing greater self-discipline and confidence. Camps are also an excellent way for teens to gain leadership experience by taking on roles of responsibility within their summer community.
Internships are a great way to develop skills, learn about industries you're interested in, and get some real-life experience while still in high school. But it doesn't end there: Internships also help strengthen a college application. They communicate a strong fit for major, show colleges that you have a solid sense of initiative, and offer an opportunity for impact that can make you stand out from the crowd.

Depending on what grade your student is in, you might consider making a loose, multi-year plan for your summers. It’s absolutely possible for students to do more than one activity during the summer. If there are multiple activities a student would like to participate in, we encourage them to include those activities in their summer plan to see how a summer might flow. Map out possible activities for the next few summers, and see if you identify a common thread or interest to pursue.
For students with unique learning styles, or who face academic or social challenges, the summer can be an especially great time to build important skills and develop new peer relationships. While many neurodiverse students can thrive in “mainstream” summer programs with the right accommodations, students and their families also have a range of more specialized programs to choose from.
Some students naturally gravitate toward activities that engage them and take initiative without needing any encouragement. On the other hand, some teens seem glued to their phone or Xbox nonstop. If your student is struggling to find an activity beyond social media or video games, it may be helpful to start with their current inclinations. Here are 4 steps to jumpstart the process.
