Tucked away in the historic town of Conway, Arkansas (25 miles from Little Rock), is Hendrix College, a small liberal arts school with a diverse, engaged and socially-conscious student body. Repeatedly named one of the nation's top "Up and Coming Liberal Arts Colleges," Hendrix is a lesser known gem of a school that offers students superior access to professors, a tight-knit community, and rigorous, personalized learning opportunities.
Located on 175 scenic acres, Hendrix offers a quintessential college campus feel, complete with red-brick buildings (3 of which are on the National Register of Historic Places). The town of Conway is fairly quiet, with lots of outdoorsy activities and a small, cultural downtown area. The college has been expanding, recently adding new Student Life and Technology Center and Wellness and Athletic Center. New apartment complexes featuring 2- and 3-bedroom options add to the myriad of unique housing options that Hendrix offers. Students have no shortage of college-based residence choices, and more than 85% of students live in such housing all four years. Community isn't just a brochure buzz-word at Hendrix: students are passionate about the true sense of connectedness on campus. Classes are small, and student access to and engagement with faculty is superior. One student even told us that a dining hall staff member knows her by name and makes her special meals to meet dietary restrictions. For students looking for a small school with a true home-away-from-home feeling, Hendrix is definitely worth a look.
Hendrix attracts politically-engaged students who care about the environment and social justice causes, and the school demands much from them intellectually. There is no hiding in the back of huge lecture halls here; classes are generally discussion-based. Psychology and biology are two of the most popular majors, and Hendrix has been noted as a college that produces a high percentage of Watson Fellows, Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars and Goldwater Scholars. Approximately two out of every three graduates enroll in graduate programs within two years of graduation, at some of the nation's most selective programs. One way Hendrix prepares students for future academic pursuits is through their unique Odyssey program, hands-on learning opportunities that let students connect academic interests with real-world experience. Throughout their 4 years, students are required to complete at least three Odyssey programs covering three different categories.
